Wonderlad
Heart-shaped facility in Catania welcoming pediatric oncology patients and community with natural materials and flexible spaces.

A heart-shaped footprint symbolizes the embrace that welcomes young oncology patients at the new branch of the Policlinico of Catania. This protective gesture is reflected in the architectural form of the traditional Sicilian baglio—a built volume whose sectional profile recalls the archetypal shape of a house. WonderLAD was conceived as a stimulating and welcoming environment, designed not only to support the care of hospitalized children, but also to foster integration with the wider community through shared educational activities. It also provides families with a comforting space that evokes the warmth of home. The project features an integrated, climate-responsive architecture, creating energy-efficient and comfortable spaces carefully designed for the well-being of their occupants. The main wooden structure ensures a high degree of spatial flexibility. The façades facing the internal garden are clad in exposed cork panels, whose natural texture contrasts with the folded white aluminum finish of the outer elevations. Large window openings facing the courtyard introduce asymmetrical cuts along the building’s envelope, bringing rhythm to the interior façades. These windows allow for generous natural daylight to fill the interior and provide expansive views of WonderLAD’s green heart.
